Oral surgery encompasses a specialised range of surgical procedures which focus on treating the mouth (oral) and jaw (maxillofacial) of patients in need. It is recognised by The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and can be performed by a qualified general dentist or an oral surgeon/oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

A number of dental conditions often require oral surgery. At D2C Dental Care, our highly skilled team possesses the expertise to conduct oral surgery procedures and resolve these type of conditions, including:

Extracting impacted teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth (third molars), or severely damaged and untreatable teeth, are the most common types requiring surgical removal. Other teeth, such as canine teeth (cuspids) and those behind canines (bicuspids) can also become impacted, causing the same problems as impacted wisdom teeth, such as infection to surrounding tissue. Thus, an experienced oral surgeon or dental surgeon is required to extract the tooth in question to prevent any infection from spreading and creating serious problems, which can compromise overall wellbeing.

Correcting tooth loss

Oral surgery plays a vital role in helping patients replace a missing tooth or several teeth using prosthetics. Once a suitable and tailored treatment plan is agreed upon, oral surgery can assist with installing dental implants, a bridge, and preparing for dentures, to name a few.

Jaw correction

Some patients are not suitable candidates for dental implants or other prosthetic treatments if they do not have adequate bone level and density. A bone grafting procedure can rebuild bone in deficient areas of your jaw to improve the fit of dentures or to prepare the jaw for prosthetics, for example. This procedure is also used in advanced cases of TMJ syndrome where surgery is an option.

All oral surgeries are performed with the aid of the latest technologies, sedative dentistry techniques and/or local anaesthetics to ensure our treatments are stress-free with little or no pain. If complex treatments are required, our dentists will use special OPG imaging of your teeth and jaw in order to best plan your treatment and will discuss all your options with you so you’re informed every step of the way.
